Avant la guerre, les officiers britanniques portaient de lourds et longs manteaux en laine qui, vous l'imaginez, n'étaient pas idéaux dans les tranchées boueuses. Deux marques britanniques, Burberry et Aquascutum, se disputent l'invention du premier manteau imperméable moderne. C'est Thomas Burberry qui, dès 1879, a breveté la gabardine, un tissu de coton serré, résistant à l'eau et respirant. C'était la solution rêvée !

Le vêtement est rapidement adopté par les officiers qui, l'achetant souvent sur leurs deniers, en font un symbole de statut et de distinction. Ses caractéristiques – le devant croisé, les épaulettes, la ceinture avec anneaux en « D » (pour y accrocher du matériel) – n'étaient pas là pour le style, mais pour la fonctionnalité.

Le Passage à l'Élégance

Après la guerre, les soldats rentrent chez eux et continuent de porter leur Trench. Il quitte le champ de bataille pour le vestiaire civil et le septième art (le cinéma). C'est là que le Trench acquiert ses lettres de noblesse.

Qui n'a jamais vu Humphrey Bogart dans Casablanca, ou Alain Delon sous un Trench ? Il devient le symbole du détective, de l'espion ou de la femme fatale, conférant une aura de mystère et d'élégance discrète.

Birth of a Legend (Old Regime)

Before the war, British officers wore heavy, long woolen greatcoats which, as you can imagine, were far from ideal in the muddy trenches. Two British brands, Burberry and Aquascutum, both claim to have invented the first modern waterproof coat. It was Thomas Burberry who, as early as 1879, patented gabardine, a tightly woven cotton fabric that was water-resistant and breathable. It was the perfect solution!

The garment was quickly adopted by officers who, often buying it themselves, turned it into a status symbol and a mark of distinction. Its features—the double-breasted front, the epaulets, the belt with "D" rings (to attach gear to)—were not there for style, but for functionality.

The Transition to Elegance

After the war, soldiers returned home and continued to wear their Trench Coats. It left the battlefield for the civilian wardrobe and the "seventh art" (cinema). This is where the Trench truly earned its reputation.

Who hasn't seen Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca, or Alain Delon in a Trench? It became the symbol of the detective, the spy, or the femme fatale, lending an aura of mystery and understated elegance.
